Description

Also known as the European flat oyster, the Belon oyster (Ostrea edulis) is most popular in Japan, Europe and the Scandanavian countries. Having a very metallic, tangy flavor due to its extremely high trace metal and iodine content, the intense taste sensation attracts a small but enthusiastic following here in the U.S.. The adductor muscle which holds closed the two shell halves is not as strong as in an American oyster, so Belons have a shorter shelf-life. We ship Belons with a rubber band encircling the shell to help it retain its freshness and shell liquor, and recommend that they be eaten within 2 days. The shell is round in shape, accented by lustrous purplish hues.

Not from around heah... as we say in Maine. Belon oysters are not indigenous to our area. They were not originally found in nature along the coast of Maine, or anywhere else in the U.S.. As the name implies, European oysters are indiginous to the shores of Europe. In the 1950s scientists interested in the potential for culturing Belon oysters along the coast of Maine accidentally released some in the Boothbay region, where they reproduced in the wild and established self-sustaining oyster beds along the entire Maine coast.
